Dance Around the World - Thank You!
December 18, 2024
From Auckland to Budapest, and Cape Town to Duns, Scottish dancers all over the globe took to the floor on Saturday 23rd November to celebrate “Dance Around the World” with photos and videos flying in to the RSCDS Dance Scottish social media pages.
First up was a post from the Southern Fling and Fringe in Melbourne, Australia swiftly followed by images from Sydney. RSCDS Auckland-Northland in New Zealand ran a Twin Event dancing the same programme in both Drury and Hikurangi, while RSCDS Adelaide held a DATW social with costumes and an international supper.
In Japan RSCDS Tokyo had held a DATW event early in November, and then came together with the Tokai Branch for an afternoon of dancing on the 23rd.
Dancers from all over North America – San Diego, Ottawa, Charleston and Vancouver – danced around the world while getting ready for the Newcastle Festival, while others stayed close to home with local events such as the colourful afternoon held by RSCDS Vancouver decorating their hall with flags of every country.
Top marks for the sunniest post have to go to the dancers saying ‘Aloha’ from Magic Island Park in Hawaii with the achievement of highest DATW post going to Jim Stott and Anne McArthur - Lake Titicaca, Peru is a perfect spot to dance the Circassian Circle. But unfortunately, Storm Bert impacted a number of events across the UK – those that were able to battle through the snow and winds enjoyed being together, and it is great to see some groups reinstating their postponed DATW events on later dates.
However whether with live or recorded music, in a small group, at a branch ball, in Vienna, Glasgow or at home like Flora Coull with her dad, it was glorious to see so many dancers coming together for the online celebration and to see so many smiling faces.
You can still find out more about the DATW dances in the Dance Around the World Digital Booklet – with info, photos, cribs, music and links to videos this digital first is free to all on the RSCDS website.

And if you are looking for the perfect Christmas stocking filler, or want a memory of DATW for yourself, why not buy the latest RSCDS DATW recording by Colin Dewar and his Scottish Dance Band.
The prize (a DATW CD) for the most eye-catching content goes to the high-altitude dancers (14,000 feet) in Peru led by Jim Stott and Anne McArthur. Highly commended are RSCDS Hawaii for dancing in such a picturesque location and Flora Coull and her dad Gary for such an engaging rendition of the Canadian Barn Dance.
Many thanks to everyone who organised an event and to the musicians who made dancing possible and finally to absolutely everyone who sent in DATW photos and videos, we loved sharing them.
Enjoy seeing a taster in this online “Thank You”.
