Quick Start Guide

Scottish Country Dancing brings people together—through movement, music and shared experience. Around the world, dancers form sociable groups, enjoying lively sets and the simple pleasure of moving in time together. You’ll usually dance in a set: lines of three, four or more couples, facing each other and ready to begin. Sets are traditionally organised from the “top” (nearest the music), helping everyone move smoothly through the dance.

Don’t worry about getting everything right first time. The atmosphere is friendly and relaxed, and there’s always someone to help you along.

Everyone’s welcome

Scottish Country Dancing is for everyone. While traditional roles use the terms “men” and “women”, what matters most is the place in the set—not who you dance with.

You’re free to dance in the role that feels right for you, and with anyone you choose. The shared enjoyment of the dance is what brings it all together.

We keep the traditional language to make learning easier, while creating a space where everyone feels comfortable to take part.

A dance that keeps changing

One of the joys of Scottish Country Dancing is that it rarely stays the same. Most dances are progressive, meaning couples move up and down the set as the dance unfolds.

You might start in one position and, before long, find yourself dancing with new people and seeing the dance from a different place. It keeps things fresh, sociable and full of variety—no two turns round the room ever feel quite the same.

Learning as you go

Each dance is made up of patterns, known as formations, combined with a small number of core steps. As you begin to recognise these, it becomes easier to join in wherever you are.

Some of the terms and movements may feel unfamiliar at first—that’s all part of the experience. With a little practice, and plenty of encouragement from the set around you, your confidence will grow quickly.

Scottish Country Dancing is something we learn together. Every dance is an opportunity to build skills, enjoy the music and share the moment.
