Ready, set… Ceilidh!

Imagine a room full of music, laughter and people of all ages dancing, whooping and clapping. That's a Ceilidh. Whether it's at a wedding, festival or community event, a Ceilidh is one of Scotland's best-loved social traditions. The dances are energetic and everyone – of any age - can get on the floor.

No experience? No problem. Lots of people come to Ceilidh for a first taste of Scottish dancing. You’ll be in good company.

Simple steps, shared fun

A Ceilidh isn’t about getting every step right—it’s about taking part and enjoying the experience.  The dances are easy to learn and quick to pick up. The band – or sometimes a Caller – takes you through the steps. And everyone else gives a helping hand.

You don’t need lessons, special clothing or even a partner. You just step onto the floor and give it a go. Before long, you’ll be spinning around, moving up and down the set, and meeting new people.

Band. Music. Action.

A Ceilidh wouldn't be a Ceilidh without the music. And the music is seriously infectious.

Live bands featuring fiddle, accordion, piano and drums play lively jigs and reels that fill the room with incredible energy.  The rhythm sets the pace, driving the dance and creating an atmosphere that’s hard to resist.  Even those not dancing end up tapping their feet and clapping away. It’s irresistible.

A tradition for every celebration

The word “Ceilidh” (pronounced kay-lee) comes from the Gaelic word for a gathering. Today, Ceilidhs are enjoyed across Scotland and around the world. From village halls and local schools to international venues and celebrations, they bring people of all generations and cultures together, through music, movement and shared experience.

Energetic, unforgettable -give it a go!

Ceilidh dancing is an energising way to stay active, a brilliant ice-breaker and a fantastic way to meet people. The welcome is warm, the music great and it’s a truly unforgettable cultural experience.  But most of all, Ceilidh is fun. That’s why so many people come back again and again.

So take that step, join the set and discover why generations of people have fallen in love with Scottish Country Dancing – Ceilidh style.
