All set? Let’s get step dancing!

Scottish dance comes in many forms, each with its own style, story and spirit. Alongside Scottish Country Dancing, Step Dancing offers a beautifully expressive and engaging way to experience Scotland’s rich dance heritage. At the RSCDS, we celebrate the full breadth of Scottish dance traditions. While our main focus is Country Dancing, we’re proud to support and share Step Dancing too—inviting dancers of all backgrounds to explore something a little different, whether at our Summer School or beyond.

Step Dancing invites you to slow things down, tune into the music and enjoy every step. Wherever you are on your dance journey, you’ll find a warm welcome—and plenty of inspiration—waiting for you.

A graceful and expressive tradition

Step Dancing is known for its elegance, precision and musicality. It features a wide variety of steps and movements, often blending influences from Scottish, Highland, French and Irish traditions.

Dances can be performed solo or in small groups, making Step Dancing both a personal and shared experience. A typical dance is made up of a sequence of steps—often six or eight phrases—building towards a satisfying finish or “close”. As the steps repeat and develop, dancers bring their own style and interpretation to the movement.

Above all, Step Dancing is about the close connection between music and motion. Timing, rhythm and expression come together to create something that feels as rewarding to dance as it is to watch.

Music to match the movement

The music for Step Dancing is light, melodic and full of character. Often gentler than the lively jigs, reels and strathspeys of Country Dancing, it complements the smooth, almost balletic quality of the steps.

This close partnership between dancer and musician lies at the heart of Step Dancing—each step carefully matched to the phrasing and rhythm of the tune.

A heritage preserved and evolving

Step Dancing has a fascinating and evolving history. Early forms taught at RSCDS Summer School grew from traditions such as “Ladies’ Step” and “Ladies’ Highland”, helping to preserve dances passed down through generations.

Influential teachers and researchers have played a vital role in shaping today’s practice—drawing on historic sources like 19th-century manuscripts, as well as keeping older dances alive through teaching and performance. Over time, new dances have been created by talented teachers around the world, ensuring the tradition continues to grow and flourish.

Inclusive, creative and rewarding

Whether you’re completely new to dance or looking to expand your skills, Step Dancing offers something for everyone. It’s an enjoyable way to build technique, develop musicality and connect more deeply with Scottish dance traditions.

At its heart, it remains true to the RSCDS spirit: welcoming, inspiring and inclusive.
