This is best described as a course for those who are about to take on a children’s class or who are interested in learning how to approach the requirements of a children’s class. It may also be of interest to those who are already leading / teaching a group of children and may be looking for fresh ideas.
Attendance on the course will result in a “Record of Completion of a course in basic SCD Teaching Skills - children”.
The course skills are useful requirements for anyone delivering SCD to children, but those seeking to study the children’s unit may not require all of the elements in the same depth. It is intended that the most relevant can be selected for delivery, depending on the needs of the course members.
Children and dancing
Dancing is a very structured activity and it develops spatial awareness, self-control, self-discipline, teamwork and healthy living. It supports many elements of the school curriculum; for example, its focus on pattern and rhythm supports the development of skills in mathematics and music.
Teaching young children can be a challenge as they expect results quickly and have very good memories. They need careful class management, and know very quickly if the person running the class is not 'in charge'. Maintaining discipline and teaching the enjoyment of dancing is something that needs to be developed over time. Be prepared to give positive encouragement and aim for high standards!
Guidance on running courses
Courses may be offered by Branches, under the guidance of a teacher with wide and varied experience of teaching Scottish Country Dancing at all levels who has also worked with children, for example delivering the Primary School Bronze Accreditation Scheme or preparing a children’s demonstration/festival team.
To qualify as an approved course, a report containing a summary of the content achieved (in accordance with the course guidelines) and the names of participants have to be submitted to the Secretary of the RSCDS. Schools wishing to add Scottish Country Dancing to their physical education repertoire may approach the RSCDS or their local Branch to request the delivery of a Basic Teaching Skills – children course as a CPD training session.
