Chester Caledonian Scottish Country Dance Society

Group profile

Chester Caledonian Scottish Country Dance Society (sometimes fondly known as Chester Cally) is proud to have recently celebrated its 60th Anniversary. Originally connected to the Chester Caledonian Association as their “Reel Club”, the Society has flourished independently now for many years.
Like most clubs our member numbers have fluctuated over time and while we are fewer than in previous years, we continue to thrive with a regular influx of new members most of whom stay to form the heart of the Society going forward.
We are also very lucky to continue to count as members some long standing, knowledgeable and experienced dancers. Two of those (being in their 10th decade and still regularly dancing) are living testament to the benefits of Scottish Country Dancing to mind and body.
The society meets at Caldy Valley Church, Chester on a Wednesday evening between September and May from 7.45 to 10.00 in the evening. We have had some talented teachers over the years and that continues now. The evening always begins with some warm up exercise or dance and often step practice for the benefit of all! We then have social dancing with a mix of new and old dances being taught or at least walked through and we are proud of our reputation as open and friendly with experienced members always happy to partner new or less confident dancers. The final part of the evening includes some dances chosen by a different individual club member each week.
We have a small Committee to whom the club always owes a debt of gratitude for the role they play in managing our resources and organising not only club nights but three wonderful dances during the year – at Christmas, Burns Night and during the summer break.

Wednesday evening sessions are in two parts:

From 7:30pm to around 8.30pm the session is led by Christine we may learn and practice basic steps and new (to us) dances. The dances in this part of the evening may have a full 'walk-through' so it's very good for beginners and improvers - and the more experienced will help the less experienced. This is followed by a short comfort break and any announcements (of dances, etc).
Please note, no refreshments are provided and you are advised to bring water with you together with a good sense of humour!
From 8.40pm 'til we run out of steam, we have an hour of social dancing; dances are recapped and walked through, if needed. This part of the evening is a bit more challenging, and not all dances may be suitable for beginners. We are now grading dances throughout the evening according to difficulty.
We also hope to hold our special dances as usual and list the dates below:
Our Christmas/President's dance will be held on Saturday 14 December 2024 at Guilden Sutton Village Hall commencing 7.15pm. Ticket price £15. (Music by Ian Slater). Light supper included.
