Following a request sent to Coates Crescent, Sheila Bain of RSCDS Aberdeen Branch attended Greenbrae Primary School in Aberdeen to help them celebrate Jubilee Day with some Scottish Dancing on Thursday, 9th June. She had 9 half hour slots with children from P1 to P4 starting at 9.10am and finishing at 2.45pm. Sheila taught various dances, depending on ages and including her own ceilidh dance, Ping, to groups of between 20 – 37 children. Each class came with only their teacher, making it hard work for Sheila. They all thought their time was too short and wanted more which we hope will lead to a return visit but perhaps not for the whole day but broken down into more manageable and much less tiring (for Sheila) 30 – 45 minute slots.
After the last two years we have had it is so refreshing to hear that schools are beginning to allow volunteers back in to teach children Scottish Country Dancing.
A big thank you to Sheila who said that although she was exhausted at the end of the day, it was really enjoyable.
If you think this is something you might like to get involved with in your area, perhaps running a lunch or after school club at your local primary school, please get in touch with the Scottish Schools Working Group via sswg@rscds.org
