Farewell to South St Nicholas Church Ceilidh

Aberdeen ceilidh

After 12 years of Aberdeen RSCDS Ceilidh class using the same hall – like many other churches in Aberdeen it closed!  One of our members suggested we have a Farewell to South St Nicholas Ceilidh so we did and what a brilliant evening we had. We booked our favourite band, The Crynoch Ceilidh Band, two members have played at our class for 10 years, Live music is very well appreciated & that’s why we get such good numbers.

Our class secretary Martin took over the food arrangements and what a fabulous buffet we had; everyone brought a plate of savoury or sweet delicacies to be shared, it was wonderful. We sold 90 tickets to members, family and friends, We had a huge raffle and we donated the profit of £500 to a local charity Friends of ANCHOR, which has really helped our family recently.

On with the dancing and the music!  We had a superb time, the age range was from under 8 to over 80 with all enjoying the fantastic music from Ian Thomson & Rob Ross, on accordion, Willie Johnstone on fiddle and Duncan Christie on drums.

We danced all our favourite dances from class evenings, including the usual old favourites like The Dashing White Sergeant, The Gay Gordons & The Virginia Reel. We also included lesser known dances like Ping, The Ceilidh Swing, The Clootie Dumpling & Dodgems which are all very simple. We also added a few Scottish country dances that our class love, including The Craven Twelvesome, Postie’s Jig and Joe McDiarmid’s Jig.

The floor was full all evening and everyone had huge smiles on their faces. Everyone mixed, made new friends and went home tired but a wee bit fitter. We have now had one class in our new hall and quite a few new people who enjoyed the ceilidh came to join us.

A very successful Farewell Ceilidh was had.
