RSCDS Adelaide and District Branch have been in touch, sharing two recent events with us.

Celebrating the past through Scottish Dance in South Australia - May 21st 2023

From teenagers to members of the University of the Third Age, more than sixty people recently danced together at the Mitcham Cultural Institute in Adelaide as part of South Australia’s History Festival. This ‘Come and Try’ dance event provided a fun way to explore the history of Scottish Country Dancing, brought to South Australia by immigrants.

Branch President Barbara Lupton welcomed everyone and handed over to teacher for the day, Noriel Tarca. She, along with teachers and dancers from Adelaide and Districts Branch took participants from a walking warm up dance “The Bramble Circle” through to a variety of energetic dances such as “Kingston Flyer” and “Catch as Catch Can”. A brief demonstration of the uniquely Scottish Strathspey step led everyone into afternoon tea, with experienced dancers performing “The Lammermuir Hills”. After a lavish spread of refreshments everyone enthusiastically headed back to the dance floor for more enjoyment and laughter, starting with “A Highland Welcome”, “Scotch Tangle” and a square formation of the beginners’ dance “Copy Cat”. A demonstration of another well-loved dance “The Deil Amang The Tailors” rounded out the day before everyone came together for “Auld Lang Syne”.

Bydand "Coronation Social" in South Australia - May 6th 2023

Noriel Tarca and her Bydand class invited dancers to polish our tiaras and medals and don evening wear to celebrate the Coronation of King Charles III.

We all had a marvellous evening, with the "Archbishop of Bydand" crowning the "King and Queen of Bydand" (class members who no longer dance).  They watched on from their stately thrones as we danced a program of favourites, including "Machine without Horses", "Westminster Reel" and "Reel of the Royal Scots".  Spare tiaras were available, and many wore their ballroom finery to mark the occasion.  The evening finished with Noriel's trademark "bubbles" and a supper certainly "fit for a king".  Noriel undeniably knows how to put on fine festivities, which all in attendance thoroughly enjoyed.  This is just one of our planned socials throughout the year, where each class will host a social for dancers across all classes to come together and dance.
