West Lothian Branch 90th Anniversary Celebrations

Dancers on the floor at the 90th Anniversary dance of the West Lothian Branch

On Saturday 9th May West Lothian Branch held a special 90th Anniversary Dance to the stirring music of Robert Whitehead and his band.

The Chair, Graham Dickson, introduced the evening by saying that what was really being celebrated was not a number. The celebration was about the people who have kept the Branch going: week after week, set after set, with friendship, laughter, and that special feeling you get when a room moves together to good music. He went on to say that everyone present was the history of RSCDS West Lothian and also the future. As we look forward, the best way to honour 90 years is to make sure there’s a 91st—and a 100th. That means keeping the doors open and the welcome wide; encouraging new dancers to try their first Pousette or Espagnol without fear; and remembering that every confident dancer in the room was once a beginner wondering which way to cast off.

Graham then introduced the Guest of Honour, Sebastian Wanless who, with Honorary Branch President, Marjorie Macrae, cut a magnificent anniversary cake baked and decorated by branch member, Shirley Nuttley.

75 dancers from West Lothian, with guests from other branches then enjoyed a programme which included dances written by our own members: Hopetoun House by Marjorie Macrae (Duffield) and The Haar on the Hill by Rona Macleod. All in all it was another memorable evening in the long history of the Branch.
